Defendersetup

Updated 2/11/07

#1. Open up Defender and you see the screen below. Click on "Tools".
(#2. After your setup this is where to scan all or certain parts of your puter. Next to "Scan" is a small triangle. Click the triangle and select "Full Scan", "Quick Scan", or "Custom Scan" to start a scan after updating.
Be sure to setup your scan as you want. i scan manually but you can setup a scheduled scan if you want).

On the Tools screen below click "General Settings".

On the "General Settings" screen below, this is the way i have it setup. this is the top third of the screen. The middle third is the next screen.
#1. DO NOT check this box. (By checking this, Defender will automatically delete what it detects as a nastie. I know of at least one circumstance where a good program was detected as a nastie and Defender deleted some of it causing many problems).
#2. If you have hispeed you can check this box and you wont notice any slow down while your emailing or working with another program and updating online. If your using dialup, leave unchecked and update separately from other internet activities before you run a scan.
Under 'Default Actions' you can change what Defender does with the nasties it finds. When i run a scan i like to 'Quarentine' all and then go to the 'Quarentine Items' screen by clicking on 'Tools" and open up Quarentine. There i can deal with whatever has infected my system.

This is the middle third of the "General Settings" screen. Again, these are my settings. The next screenshot is the bottom third of the "General Settings" screen.

This is the bottom third of the "General Settings" screen. Again, these are my settings.

Click the Defender "Back" button at the upper left, then click on "Microsoft Spynet" and you will see the screen below. As you can see, i didnt join the spynet but its up to you. You can close out Defender now.

Updating manually is abit difficult to find. Here is what i did:
On the main screen, to the right of the "?" at the top of the screen, click on the triangle.
Select "About Windows Defender".
At the bottom right click on "Check For Updates" and defender will check and d/l if any. (it takes as long as MSAS did to update).
