Thunderbird

Updated 2/11/07

NOTE: Screenshots were taken on XP running Windows Modified Theme, "Windows Classic". (Looks like 98)

Throughout the Thunderbird setup i will use a fake name and isp to fill in the appropriate areas. The name is:
yourname@yourisp.com
Once you have downloaded Thunderbird then double click the .exe file and we can start the process of installation.
Open Thunderbird and click on "File", hilite "New", click "Account" and the screen below will appear.
In my case i only want an email account but the choice is yours.
Once you have put a tick in the circle next to what you want to include then click "Next".

The screenshot below is where you type in your name and isp address. Read the directions on the screen and fill out as directed, then click "Next".

If your email addy is "yourname@yourisp.com" you type "yourname" in the box. When done click "Next".

On this screen you type, in this case, "yourname". Simple isnt it;-D. Now click "Next".

Here you verify all your info and it should look like this:
Account Name: yourname
Email Address: yourname@yourisp.com
Incoming User Name: yourname
Incoming Server Name: yourisp.com
Incoming Server Type: POP3
Outgoing User Name: yourname@yourisp.com
Outgoing Server Name (SMTP): yourisp.com
If you want to download your messages now, i recommend waiting till your completely setup before downloading anything. Click "Next".

Here is where it gets a bit tricky. On the left column, at the top, click on your email addy and you will see the screen below.
Account Settings:
Under "Account Name", and we're using yourname@yourisp.com, you type in your email addy.
Your Name: yourname
Email Address: yourname@yourisp.com
Outgoing Server: yourname@yourisp.com

On the left, click on "Server Settings".
Server Name: yourname.com
Port: 110
User Name: yourname@yourisp.com
Security Settings: I have "Never" but its up to you..
Server Settings: Its entirely up to you. You can check the box next to "Check for new messages every" and you can type in any length of time. Then while your online, you then "Minimize" Thunderbird and it will check every xx minutes for new mail.
Leave messages on server: If left checked you can clog your server if you dont continualy clean it out but you can keep it checked untill you know your "send/receive" works.
Local Directory: Make sure it is correct.

On the left, click on "Copies and Folders".
Setup is the same as mine but your email addy should appear on the right in 3 places for the folders.

On the left click on "Composition & Addressing.
I recommend "Compose messages in HTML format.
"Automatically quote the original message when replying". Your choice.
"Addressing" is your choice.

On the left click on "Disk Space".
Pretty basic so leave as is.

On the left click on "Return Receipts".
Pretty basic so leave as is.

On the left click on "Security".
Leave as is.

On the left click on "Account Settings".
Account name should be, in this case, "yourname@yourisp.com". use your own email addy.

On the left click on "Disk Space". Yes its a second time.
You can set it up as you please.

On the left click on "Outgoing Server (SMTP) settings".

If, on the right, you dont see anything in the top white rectangler screen, you need to click on the "Add" button.
After clicking on the "Add" button you will see the screenshot below.

On this screen you need to type in your "Server Name" or, in this case, "yourisp.com".
Check "Use Name and Password" and fill in your email address "yourname@yourisp.com
Use secure connection: None.
Click "Ok" on this screen and the last screen and your setup.

Now lets setup your "Options". Click on "Tools", at the top of Thunderbird, then click on "Options".
At the top of the screen click on the "General" icon.
Under "Default Settings", i have Thunderbird as my "Default" email application but you can add News and/or RSS Feeds if you want.
Under "Thunderbird Start Page" leave as is.
Under "When new messages arrive" you can set it up as you want.
Under "Connection" i suggest you leave it as is.
Click "Ok".

Next, click on the "Display" icon.
Use the "Default" settings under the "Formatting", "Lables", and "Fonts" tabs.

Next, click on the "Composition" tab at the top.
Click on the "General" tab.
The only thing i would change is the "Wrap plain text messages at 60 characters". I changed the number to 60.

Next, click on the "Addressing tab". These are my setings but you can check any box you want.
Under the "Spelling" tab you can set it up as you please but i dont have anything checked.

Next, click on the "Privacy" icon.
This is the way i have mine set up and it is a good setup but you can change whatever you like.
Under the "Email Scams" tab, i have it checked but no checkes under the "Antivirus", "Passwords", or "Security" tabs.

Next, click on the "Attachments" tab.
In the "Attachments Folder" area you can set it up as you want.
In the "Download Actions" area i have left it with the "Default" settings.

Next, click on the "Advanced" tab.
Under the "General" tab these are my settings and i recommend them.
Under the "Offline and Disk Space" tab i left it with the "Default" settings.
Under the "Update" tab i unchecked all. Ill update it myself thank you;-).

There is one more thing, an "addon" called "Allow HTML Temp". Here is the link:
https://addons.mozilla.org/thunderbird/1556/
This is a secutity issue.
Here is what you do:
Right click the Green install button, select "Open link in new window". When the small screen pops up wait till the "Install Now" button lights up then click it.
Download the "Allow HTML Temp". Then click on "View" hilite "Toolbars" and click on "Customize". The next screen will show your new download. (You may have to scroll down abit to see it). You simply "Drag" the "Show HTML Temp" icon up to your top bar with "Get Mail" and etc, and release the left click on your mouse and there it is in the bar. Also at this time i like to put a check in the box next to "Use small icons" at the bottom left of the screen. It gives me abit more screen to work with.
Now your ready to use "Allow HTML Temp" by clicking next to the email you want to read in HTML it will light up with a blue color. Then click on "Allow HTML Temp" and open up the email. you will see the yellow smiles if it was sent that way.
